What is Dichroic Glass?

Dichroic glass was developed by NASA for use in the space industry. It is made up of multiple thin layers of different metal oxides deposited on to the surface of the glass in a vacuum chamber. Certain wavelengths of light can pass through or be reflected resulting in a wonderful array of colour.

The Fusing Process

Glass which has the same compatibility with each other is cut to shape and placed on the kiln shelf in layers of up to three pieces. The glass is fired up to 800 degrees centigrade and then left in the kiln to anneal which means allowing the glass to cool slowly until back to room temperature. This annealing process gives each piece its strength and durability. There can be up to three firings for each piece.
